Originally a side project for songwriter Willie Ferguson, Gie Few has been releasing its brand of indie folk-rock since 2003. Growing up in Michigan, Willie got his start as a freelance drummer. As one-third of the college rock band Mamalapeina, alongside Patrick Bever (Dirty Americans) & Marco Franco, he cut his teeth co-writing and producing. Eventually they disbanded and Willie moved to Los Angeles. Drawing on his early folk-rock influences, he began to hone his craft in the traditions laid by the likes of Dylan, Springsteen, Neil Young, and The Band. Ferguson booked a few gigs around Hollywood, playing with a strong cast of local musicians. It was through those early shows that he and Jon Lacroix became friends. Lacroix has played keyboards and produced several tracks for Ferguson over the years, and continues to be an important part of the group’s sound.
Gie Few’s strongest success has come from licensing the use of their music for television and film. A version of Dr. Inhaled - from Agrees & Grins - was used in the film Under The Same Moon (La Misma Luna). Haven’t Heard From Heaven In Days was featured in the CBS hit Person Of Interest. Ferguson was also hired to write & play original material for Jim Breuer’s documentary More Than Me (Pilotfish Productions). Alongside film composer Timo Elliston, Willie contributed to a good chunk of the score - including a superb remix of All The Sunshine (Perfect was also added to the soundtrack). Several other tracks have been licensed for use throughout the world. In 2009, Gie Few signed an exclusive publishing deal with VTown Cartel Music.
Prior to relocating to Southern California (Willie now resides in Orange County), Ferguson spent a year living in Glasgow, Scotland. That year shaped the early sound of Gie Few, as well as the band’s name - which comes from a Robert Burns poem. ‘Here’s tae us, wha’s like us, gie few and they’re a deed’. Although that initial Celtic influence is not as obvious anymore, the name lives on.
